What is lifestyle medicine?

Lifestyle medicine is an evidence-based and growing medical field that focuses on the factors in our daily lives that have the greatest impact on health and disease. Through decades of research, we know that up to 80% of all chronic diseases can be prevented and that our habits play a crucial role.

The core of lifestyle medicine is understanding how a person lives, what goals and challenges exist, and then identifying small, achievable changes that make a real difference. These changes often create ripple effects that increase wellbeing, motivation, and support more health-promoting decisions in everyday life.

Lifestyle medicine rests on six pillars, the so-called modifiable lifestyle factors:

  • Physical activity

  • Diet and nutrition

  • Sleep and recovery

  • Stress and mental wellbeing

  • Connections

  • Environment and toxins

A healthcare provider within lifestyle medicine uses these pillars in both assessment and treatment, combined with knowledge of behavior change and motivation. The aim is to offer a personal, proactive, and sustainable path to better health.

Internationally, organisations such as:
British Society of Lifestyle Medicine, British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine och American College of Lifestyle Medicine work to strengthen research, education, and clinical practices, and to shape a future where healthcare not only treats disease but actively works preventively with health.
